Hose, Tights, and Leggings: Keeping Legs Warm in Winter

Suddenly there’s a chill in the air, and the skirts we love to wear aren’t as comfortable as they were before. Bare legs are definitely not going to work in the fall and winter months, so what’s the best way to cover your legs when it’s cold? Are pantyhose passé? What about tights? Here are a few ideas to keep wearing skirts and dresses without shivering this winter.

Pantyhose are still in vogue, and seen regularly on Princess Kate, who has renewed interest in pantyhose for women of all ages.  A good rule of thumb is to remember this simple motto: “Show Toes-No Hose.” Essentially, you don’t want to wear hose with an open-toed shoe. If you like wearing hose, choose a color that matches your skin tone, and wear them with close-toed shoes. In winter, dark hose are acceptable, but keep in mind that opaque hose and tights are best for day wear. Save your pretty, sheer, black hose for nighttime and formal dress.

If your work dress code allows it, wear leggings with skirts to work. These look great with boots or close-toed shoes for winter. To keep your outfit looking professional, steer clear of brightly colored tights. These are a passing trend, but black or brown is always classic and conservative. Patterned tights are cute, but make sure the pattern isn’t competing with the rest of the outfit. Keep it muted so your patterned tights don’t get noticed before you do.

Consider knee-high boots with skirts, but always wear opaque tights or leggings. Never show a nude knee in the winter. Another cute, cozy look is to wear ankle length leggings with a skirt and flats, heels, or boots. Leggings provide coverage, but they are a little less restrictive than traditional hose or tights. Bring your favorite skirts and dresses into the cooler months with the addition of hose, tights, or leggings.
